Acer Aspire 5942 and 8942 – first notebooks with ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650

Under: News 5 comments

We are going to speculate a bit here, but in a recent notebook dealer event Acer announced two new gaming models are coming before the end of the year and we decided to share that information. Both Acer Aspire 5942G and Aspire 8942G will be based on Core i7 720QM processor (we bet Intel will have a hard time explaining the low 1.6 GHz speed to users) and ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650 graphics. THe new models will probably derive from their current 5940G and 8940G lines which are based on Core i7 platform, so we don’t expect huge changes in their looks or technical specifications.

Currently Acer Aspire 5940G (where and if it is available) is based on Intel PM55 chipset, Core i7 720QM and mid-range Mobility Radeon HD4650 graphic card. The model is potential bestseller, no matter that its 15.6-inch screen is only WXGA HD Ready (1366×768 pixels). It’s a Windows 7 notebook, and we really hope that its successor will include one of the new 640 GB hard drives from Wester Digital, which should be available by the time the Aspire 5942 comes out.

Acer's Aspire 8942 will probably look a lot like this Aspire 8940G. 5942 shares the look too.

The top of the end Aspire 8942G will inherit its features from today’s Acer top 18.4-inch model 8940G, which is also based on i7 720QM processor, but includes NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M or GTS 350M videocards, which will be swapped for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. The more, the better philosophy puts this model a bit on the heavier side and it will have to compete to 18.4-inch models from Toshiba and BFG, but it will include one of ATI’s new Mobile Radeons for sure, which already makes it good choice.

Acer also stated they will release gaming notebooks and an especially interesting 17-inch model, probably with similar specifications and 1600×900 screen resolution.

Twisted expectations?

Like 5/10 on the average for the two models. Acer Aspire 5942 has too low screen resolution, and Aspire 8942 weights too much (compared to smaller notebooks)

Higher Twisted Rateing is worse!
